A biochemistry lab at the University of Missouri exploded on Monday injuring four people and hospitalizing one researcher. The lab studied sulfate-reducing bacteria. The explosion was caused by hydrogen gas from a 55 inch steel gas cylinder which was being used for an experiment. Hydrogen gas can form exposive mixtures with the air and is extremely flammable. The explosion caused a fire and blew out windows and walls.
